Everybody is talking about it and companies are head over heels into recruiting the best people out there to handle their social media accounts. On the other hand, nothing spreads faster than negative publicity on social media channels. And this type of publicity and negative attention are oftentimes generated by companies\u2019 major social media fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we will be discussing some of the biggest fails from the last ten years and the ways in which companies handled those situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. StubHub is \u201clooking forward\u201d to the weekend<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>StubHub&#8217;s &#8220;Thank fuck it&#8217;s Friday!&#8221; tweet begins this series of social media epic fails. Unfortunately for StubHub, someone who had access to their account <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/adfreak\/stubhubs-tweeter-was-obscenely-happy-leave-work-friday-144301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">forgot<\/a> to logout before posting the message from the company\u2019s Twitter account. Shortly afterwards the company posted an apology tweet. J.P. Morgan &#8211; Nobody loves banks anymore!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>J.P. Morgan representatives thought it would be a good idea to engage consumers through a Twitter Q&amp;A session. The problem with the idea was that, at that time, people weren\u2019t really fond of major banks. Therefore, the Q&amp;A with vice chairman James B. Lee Jr. from J.P. Morgan became an open ground where people expressed their frustrations. As a result, J.P. Kmart thanked its employees with\u2026some extra working hours!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2013 Thanksgiving, Kmart revealed they would be open earlier than ever and would stay open through all of Black Friday. Consequently, angry customers <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/10-worst-social-media-marketing-fails-of-2013-2013-11?op=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">turned<\/a> to social media to complain about the ethics of the decision. LG &#8211; Don\u2019t make fun of an iPhone from an iPhone!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, LG thought it would be funny if it smirked at the iPhone 6 Plus for being bendable in tight pants pockets. The idea was to compare it with their GFlex, a phone that is ready-bent. The result: a tweet with the message \u201cOur phones don&#8217;t bend, they&#8217;re naturally curved \ud83d\ude42 #bendgate.&#8221; sent from an iPhone. How \u201ccool\u201d is that!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_LG.png\" alt=\"social_media_fails_LG\" class=\"wp-image-449\" width=\"356\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_LG.png 344w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_LG-300x358.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.&nbsp;<strong>Home Depot &#8211; You are all a bunch of monkeys!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, 2013 was the year of social media fails as Home Depot was also one of the brands that suffered from a blunder made by their agency. The latter sent out a racist tweet that got an employee fired. The photo for ESPN show dubbed &#8220;College GameDay,&#8221; which Home Depot sponsors, featured two African-American men drumming. In the middle was a third man dressed up in a monkey suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after the tweet, the retailer issued a public apology, adding that it fired the employee who sent out the offensive <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/home-depot-racist-tweet-retailer-fires-employee-who-tweeted-offensive-monkey-remark-photo-1462342\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a>: \u201cWe have zero tolerance for anything so stupid and offensive. Deeply sorry. McDonald\u2019s &#8211; Stories can turn into horror movies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the beginning of 2012, McDonald\u2019s <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kashmirhill\/2012\/01\/24\/mcdstories-when-a-hashtag-becomes-a-bashtag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">attempted<\/a> to engage customers through two promoted hashtags on Twitter: #meetthefarmers and #mcdstories. Instead the fast food chain received a storm of horror stories about the quality of the food, the treatment from employees, or the sanitary conditions of the restaurants. At least McDonald\u2019s quickly realized that the Twitter campaign \u201cdid not go as planned\u201d and pulled it out within two hours. Chrysler &#8211; Choose your social media agency wisely!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2011, one of New Media Strategies\u2019 employees dropped the f-bomb in a tweet from client Chrysler&#8217;s Twitter account. Pepsi plays with voodoo dolls<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in 2013, Pepsi <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/football\/news-and-comment\/pepsi-forced-to-apologise-after-image-of-cristiano-ronaldo-voodoo-doll-tied-to-a-railway-track-and-poked-by-needles-is-posted-on-facebook-page-8954700.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">released<\/a> a set of ads on its Swedish Facebook page showing a voodoo doll of Cristiano Ronaldo &#8211; in red Portugal kit complete with visible No 7 &#8211; being tied to a train track, having its head crushed by a can of Pepsi and being spiked by needles. The caption \u201cWe&#8217;re going to pass over Portugal\u201d was under the train track picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The viral ads were posted on the day of the second-leg of the World Cup qualifying play-off between Sweden and Portugal. Shortly after posting, they were forced to remove the ads and apologize after a Portuguese anti-Pepsi Facebook group formed and gained over 100K fans in a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"580\" height=\"464\" src=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_Pepsi.png\" alt=\"social_media_fails_Pepsi\" class=\"wp-image-451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_Pepsi.png 580w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_Pepsi-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_Pepsi-512x410.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Amy\u2019s Baking Company Bakery Boutique &amp; Bistro &#8211; It can\u2019t get worse than this!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This happened in 2013, when the restaurant was featured on an episode of Gordon Ramsey\u2019s <em>Kitchen Nightmares<\/em>. <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/ryanhatesthis\/this-is-the-most-epic-brand-meltdown-on-facebook-ever#.gkzvaG6R7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Sources<\/a> say that the owners were dumped by Ramsey after being too difficult to work with. After a while nasty comments started flooding the restaurant\u2019s Facebook page and owners Samy and Amy Bouzaglo joined the conversation with the purpose of defending themselves against nasty users. To make things worse, they also started monitoring a Reddit thread about what was happening on their Facebook page. The result was one of the biggest social media fails of all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"536\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_amybaking.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_amybaking.png 536w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_amybaking-300x264.png 300w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_amybaking-512x450.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5\">1. US Airways &#8211; Wrong image!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, US Airways tweeted a reply to a customer. Nothing wrong with it until you saw the attached photo of a naked woman with a toy airplane between her legs. The tweet was in the US Airways Twitter feed for about an hour. A representative for US Airways sent the following email to <a title=\"social media fails\" href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/us-airways-pornographic-tweet-2014-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Business Insider<\/a>: \u201cWe apologize for the inappropriate image we recently shared in a Twitter response. Our investigation has determined that the image was initially posted to our Twitter feed by another user. We captured the tweet to flag it as inappropriate. Unfortunately the image was inadvertently included in a response to a customer. We immediately realized the error and removed our tweet. We deeply regret the mistake and we are currently reviewing our processes to prevent such errors in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"426\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_USAirways.png\" alt=\"social_media_fails_USAirways\" class=\"wp-image-453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_USAirways.png 426w, https:\/\/swat.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/social_media_fails_USAirways-300x335.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To conclude, it\u2019s not corporates who fail at social media management but individuals, people posting from other accounts than their own. This appears to be the main cause for some of the biggest fails from the last couple of years. The question is: why is this happening? Our guess would be that social media agencies overload their employees with more than 2-3 accounts.
